Future Focus Tumu Trip

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Tumu Hub was lucky enough to go on a school trip. We went to the Ōtakaro (Avon River) near Margaret Mahy playground to learn about Climate Change and what our city, Ōtautahi, is doing to make the city more future-focused and sustainable.

We learnt that transportation is the worst cause of climate change in Ōtautahi. This is because 83% of people drive about in petrol and diesel cars and less than 1% of people have electric cars. We can help our city by walking, biking or taking public transport more often.

We also learnt about what we eat and where our food comes from affects climate change. The best thing for us to do to help our planet is to eat less meat and do something like having a “meatless Monday.”

Also, growing your own fruit and vegetables is a great thing to do. On this trip, we visited the Ōtakaro Orchard. This is a huge edible garden in the city and we got to eat mulberries, sweet peas, feijoas and even edible flowers.

Our city is trying really hard to be more sustainable. You might be sitting there thinking…what can I do? It is as simple as turning off the lights if you’re not in the room, turning off appliances at night and popping on a jumper if you are cold, instead of using more heating.

Bully Free Week

Last week was Bully Free week. In Tumu we were challenged to become ‘Kindness Secret Agents’. Each Tumu student was given the name of another student in the hub in secret. Throughout the week they were challenged to do some random acts of kindness for their secret student. In addition to their random acts of kindness, Tumu students looked into what kindness looks like and created their own kindness precepts.

Here are some of the Tumu students running a dance party for the whole of Kakano (Year 1/2) class.

Playtime Market

The children of Tumu were having a great time last week at lunchtime.

The children created a marketplace, using acorns for money, and buying lots of different pieces of equipment to build huts and shops.
